An Airport with a History
Sharjah International Airport is the main airport serving the city of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. It is located ten kilometers away from Sharjah City Centre and 15km away from Dubai. The airport was opened in 1977 and is owned by the Sharjah Airport Authority.
A major redevelopment and expansion was carried out at the airport from 2005 to 2009. The project involved expansion of the transit area through the creation of three new gate lounges with new air bridges and increased access through the duty free area, transfer counters and cafeterias.
The expansion also included extension of the arrivals area (with an in-bound baggage system), arrivals concourse, customs areas, immigration pod, renovation and upgrade of driveways and substantial external landscaping.
